TMJ Pain Management
What is a TMJ?
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ), is the hinge-like joint that connects the lower jaw (mandible) to the skull. Dysfunction or disorders of the TMJ can lead to a host of unpleasant symptoms including pain and difficultly with movement. Chronic dysfunction of the muscles, ligaments, and structures associated with this joint are categorized as temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD, TMJ-D, TMJD).

Did You Know?
The TMJ is the most complex joint in the human body. The mandible is the only bone with joints on both sides of the body, and it has the unique ability to act as a sliding hinge. This configuration allows for movement up and down, side to side, forward and back.

How to Minimize My TMJ Symptoms
Gentle massages, stretching, and some lifestyle changes are enough for most people to get relief from slight to moderate TMD symptoms. Some patients may be recommended an appliance called a deprogrammer, which is a special mouthpiece that aids a dentist in identifying and adjusting a traumatic bite. Orthodontic treatment may be recommended instead if there is a significant bite discrepancy. However, if symptoms persist or worsen, then detailed imaging of the joint may be required, as well as a referral to a TMJ specialist.
